How to have more energy in Spring

Ayurveda, your Energy Level and Spring

As the days get longer and the weather warms up, spring is a time of renewal and rejuvenation. However, for many people, it can also be a time of low energy and sluggishness. If you’re feeling tired and lethargic this spring, Ayurveda may offer some solutions.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine that emphasizes the importance of balance and harmony in the body and mind. According to Ayurveda, there are three doshas, or energetic principles, that govern our physical and mental characteristics: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha has its own unique qualities and tendencies, and maintaining balance between them is essential for optimal health and wellbeing.

Springtime is Kapha time. Kapha is made of the elements earth and water and is characterized by the following qualities:

  • Heavy: Kapha is heavy, slow, and stable in nature. During the spring, this can manifest as a feeling of heaviness or sluggishness in the body.
  • Cold: Kapha is also cold in nature, which can make us feel cold and damp during the spring season.
  • Moist: Kapha is associated with moisture, which can manifest as springtime allergies, congestion, and excess mucus.
  • Slow: Kapha is the slowest of the three doshas, and during the spring, this can lead to a feeling of lethargy or stagnation in the body.

How to boost Energy during Spring?

To boost your energy this spring, here are some Ayurvedic tips to try:

Follow a Kapha-pacifying diet

Kapha dosha is associated with heaviness, lethargy, and sluggishness, and these qualities can be exacerbated in the springtime. To counteract Kapha’s tendencies, focus on light, warming foods that are easy to digest. This might include soups, stews, and broths, as well as spices like ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is essential for maintaining energy and vitality. In Ayurveda, warm water is preferred over cold water, as it is believed to be more easily absorbed by the body. You can also add warming herbs and spices to your water, such as ginger or cinnamon, to help boost your metabolism and energy levels.

Practice yoga and pranayama

Yoga and pranayama, or breathwork, are powerful tools for balancing the doshas and increasing energy. In the spring, focus on practices that are invigorating and warming, such as sun salutations, backbends, and kapalabhati (breath of fire). See more examples below.

Get plenty of rest

Although it may seem counterintuitive, getting enough rest is essential for maintaining energy levels. Ayurveda recommends going to bed before 10 pm and avoiding stimulating activities before bed, such as watching TV or using your phone.

Practice self-care

Self-care practices, such as Abhyanga (self-massage) and Shirodhara (oil dripping on the forehead), can help to soothe the nervous system and promote relaxation and rejuvenation. Try incorporating these practices into your daily routine to boost your energy and vitality.

Yoga for more energy in Spring

One of the primary benefits of yoga is increased energy and vitality, which can help you stay focused, motivated, and productive throughout the day. Here are some yoga and breathing exercises that can help you feel more energized this spring:

Sun Salutations

Sun Salutations are a series of yoga postures that are performed in a flowing sequence to invigorate the body and awaken the mind. They are a great way to warm up the body and get the blood flowing, which can help to boost energy levels. Try practicing a few rounds of Sun Salutations in the morning to start your day off on the right foot. Sign up here to learn Sun Salutations in 3 days!

Kapalabhati Breathing

Kapalabhati is a powerful breathing technique that involves rapid, forceful exhalations through the nose. This technique helps to increase oxygen flow to the brain and body, which can help to boost energy levels and promote mental clarity. To practice Kapalabhati, sit in a comfortable cross-legged position and exhale forcefully through the nose while pulling the belly in towards the spine. Inhale passively and repeat for several rounds.

Bhastrika Breathing

Bhastrika is another energizing breathing technique that involves rapid, forceful inhalations and exhalations through the nose. This technique helps to increase the flow of oxygen to the body and promote mental clarity and focus. To practice Bhastrika, sit in a comfortable cross-legged position and inhale and exhale forcefully through the nose while keeping the breath smooth and steady. Repeat for several rounds.

Camel Pose

Camel Pose is a heart-opening yoga posture that can help to increase energy and boost mood. It involves kneeling on the floor with the hips lifted and the hands resting on the lower back. Lift the chest and tilt the head back to stretch the neck. This posture helps to improve circulation and oxygen flow, which can help to boost energy levels and promote mental clarity.

Cat-Cow Stretch

Cat-Cow Stretch is a gentle yoga posture that involves moving the spine in a fluid motion between a rounded position (cat) and an arched position (cow). This movement helps to stretch and strengthen the spine, which can help to alleviate tension and increase energy levels. To practice Cat-Cow Stretch, start on your hands and knees with your wrists under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Inhale and arch your back, lifting your tailbone and head. Exhale and round your spine, tucking your tailbone and chin towards your chest.

In conclusion, Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to boosting energy and vitality this spring. By following a Kapha-pacifying diet, staying hydrated, practicing yoga and pranayama, getting plenty of rest, and practicing self-care, you can support your body’s natural rhythms and feel more energized and vibrant all season long.
